The ALD/DSO Relationship

For more than 25 years, the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) has been the only independent and unbiased non-profit association dedicated to improving patient care with the proper use of laser technology.

During this time, the ALD has carried out its mission by providing the finest caliber of laser education and training untarnished by commercial influence. In fact, the ALD certification program for standard and advanced proficiency levels is the recognized benchmark of excellence throughout the world.

In recent years, the ALD has been approached by several DSO and group dental practices to help them develop standardized and scalable laser safety and proficiency training programs within their organizations.

One example of this is Heartland Dental, who recently invited ALD Treasurer and Board Member Dr. Ed Kusek to provide on-site dental laser certification and hands-on clinical education to over 120 dentists and hygienists.

In order to meet the growing demand for laser safety and training for rapidly expanding DSOs such as Heartland Dental as well as smaller, regional dental group practices, the ALD is developing a formalized program designed to ensure that the dental teams employed by dental group practices are at the highest-level of clinical laser expertise, while also elevating each location’s standard of patient care.  This soon-to-launch program will include the following DSO-friendly components:

  • Special Corporate Membership Classification
  • Onsite Training & Certification Programs for Dental Teams
  • Web-Based Training and Certification Programs for Dental Teams
  • Train the Trainer Programs
  • Group Discounts for Attending ALD Annual Conferences
  • ALD/DSO Co-Marketing Programs

The ALD’s formalized DSO Training & Certification Program (DTCP) will be officially launched during the upcoming ALD 2019 meeting, which will take place in Dallas on April 4-6.

Sending executives, dentists and hygienists from your organization to attend ALD 2019 is a great way to experience all that the academy has to offer before we officially roll-out DTCP. Think of it as a deep-dive test-drive!

Discover the Laser-Systemic Connection

This year’s meeting promises to be one of the best, thanks to its relevant and timely total health focus. “The Laser-Systemic Connection: Lighting the Way to a Healthier Mouth and Body,” with the opening keynote by leading oral-systemic health authority, Charles Whitney, MD.

Dr. Whitney is the nation’s leading physician advocate for bridging the gap between dentistry and medicine. In fact, Dr. Whitney’s specialty of heart attack, stroke and dementia prevention relies heavily on collaborating with dental clinicians to accurately diagnose and effectively treat periodontal disease.

Why did we choose the laser systemic theme?  The answer is quite simple. For decades, ALD members were the unsung heroes of oral-systemic health. First by applying laser technology to treat periodontal disease and more recently, by applying light therapy to help patients suffering from the sleep obstructed breathing, TMJ and oral mucositis.

Speaking of oral mucositis, I recently had the distinct pleasure of working with Dr. Whitney to co-manage one of his patients who was undergoing chemotherapy and was threatening to stop treatment due to his severe oral mucositis. This was a great example of medical-dental collaboration for the benefit of the patient.

I was able to offer the patient relief by using photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy – which was effective after just two treatments!

Of course, we’ll have an entire PBM track in Dallas. Think about it. How many patients could your DSO or group practice help by having your clinicians become proficient in the application of PBM to reduce pain and promote healing.

And yes, PBM  can help DSOs and group practices have a positive impact on the opioid addiction crisis!
