Fracking headlines have filled the dental press in recent months. The dental fracking that is most noted in today’s dental headlines comes from direct-to-consumer (D2C) clear aligner therapy. The trailblazer and lightning rod in D2C aligners is Smile Direct Club (SDC), founded in 2014.  A very litigious undercurrent encircles the entire home therapy deliberation. Although the direct supervision aspect of D2C business model is very pertinent and poignant, this article contends that SDC is simply the fruit, not the root, of a larger issue. Additionally, the partners will remain actively engaged in the expansion across the United States. Mid-Atlantic Topco LLC, operating as Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners, a dental support organization (DSO) and a portfolio company of S.C. Goldman & Company, LLC, announced that it has acquired DentalOne Partners  from Dental Investments, LLC.New Acquisition Creates One Of The Largest U.S. DSOs
Mid-Atlantic Topco LLC, operating as Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners, a dental support organization (DSO) and a portfolio company of S.C. Goldman & Company, LLC, announced that it has acquired DentalOne Partners  from Dental Investments, LLC. Under the terms of the agreement, Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners acquired the equity of DentalOne’s operating subsidiaries in an all-cash deal. Consolidation is considered to be the first wave in the modern dental marketplace, and some believe the second wave has just arrived. Smile Brands Inc., a DSO, announced that it has made a strategic investment in DecisionOne Dental Partners, a DSO with approximately 30 affiliated practices in the Chicago area, to help fund DecisionOne’s continued growth. This is not the first time a DSO has acted as PE for another DSO. In April of 2017, CORDENTAL Group, a start-up with six locations under consideration in the Mid-Atlantic, made Group Dentistry Now’s “Emerging Dental Groups to Watch Now” list. At that time, we reported that they had an aggressive growth plan of affiliating with 50-75 practices over the next three to five years. Fast forward to today, and the small dental group with 13 affiliated practices has acquired the much larger AppleWhite Dental Partners, including their network of 35 offices, 50 dentists, and 350 employees, which serve nearly 185,000 patients annually.
