DSO Spotlight
Smile Doctors, the largest orthodontic support organization (OSO) in the United States, has announced the acquisition of myOrthos, a OSO with more than 70 affiliated locations across 13 states. This strategic expansion strengthens Smile Doctors’ market presence, increasing its network to over 550 affiliated locations in 36 states. Notably, this acquisition facilitates Smile Doctors’ entry into four new states: Delaware, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The Dallas-based Smile Doctors was founded in 2015 by Dr. Scott Law, Dr. Dana Fender, and Dr. Greg Goggans. They landed an investment from private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners in January 2022. At the time, Smile Doctors had 295 non-branded practices in its network.
Strengthening Commitment
Their growth strategy is acquisition and de novo. In 2023, they welcomed Fort Worth Orthodontic Specialists (TX), Thrive Orthodontics & Thrive Pediatric Dentistry (NJ), Best Smiles Orthodontics (FL), Lepley Orthodontics (TX), CC Braces (TX), McReath Orthodontics (WI), Dau Orthodontics (FL) and de novo locations in North Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Virigina.
The latest move highlights Smile Doctors’ dedication to delivering industry-leading support to its affiliated practices, ensuring orthodontists have access to advanced tools, technology, and resources to focus on patient care.
“We have always respected the expertise of myOrthos’ affiliated doctors and the impact they and their dedicated teams make every day on their patients,” said Dr. Greg Goggans, Co-Founder and Chief Compliance Officer of Smile Doctors. “This acquisition will strengthen our shared commitment to supporting exceptional orthodontic care across the country, and we’re thrilled to extend a warm welcome to the myOrthos team.”
A Bold Growth Strategy in a Shifting Industry Landscape
The acquisition of myOrthos represents one of the most significant expansions in Smile Doctors’ history and serves as a strategic milestone in its long-term growth plan. This move not only strengthens Smile Doctors’ position as the largest OSO in the country but also reinforces its ability to thrive in an evolving industry landscape. By integrating myOrthos into its network, Smile Doctors is making a decisive statement about its commitment to expansion, innovation, and market leadership in orthodontic care.
This acquisition underscores Smile Doctors’ aggressive M&A strategy and the financial strength of its balance sheet. While other OSOs have slowed their growth initiatives, Smile Doctors continues to identify and pursue opportunities that align with its mission of clinical excellence and expanded patient access.
“M&A remains an important avenue for us in achieving continued growth,” said J. Hedrick, CEO of Smile Doctors. “That said, our focus has always been on partnering with exceptional orthodontists who share our values and commitment to clinical excellence. The outstanding orthodontists from myOrthos exemplify the high standards of care and professionalism that define our network. Together, we’ll continue raising the bar for orthodontic treatment nationwide.”
Ensuring a Seamless Transition for Patients and Providers
Patients of myOrthos’ affiliated practices can expect uninterrupted, high-quality care from their trusted orthodontists and teams. The integration process will be carefully phased, ensuring a smooth transition for both providers and patients alike.
