There has been a lot Dr. Wayne Mortenson, Founder and former CEO of Mortenson Dental Partners (MDP), has learned on his journey from 1 practice to 140 practices. A pioneer in the dental support organization space long before it was a trend, MDP has been treating patients for 40 years. And although they did not grow the business into what it is today alone, Dr. Mortenson and his wife, Sue, are the backbone of the organization.
A hallmark of Dr. Mortenson’s personality is his willingness to share openly and honestly about lessons he has learned along the way in business and in life. This year, Scaling Up Group Dental Symposium, which will be held August 21-23, is excited to offer attendees an opportunity to get up-close and personal with Dr. Mortenson as he hosts a Q&A breakout session.
Attendees are invited to ask him anything they would like to know. The breakout session will be in a small group setting, with the conversation led by attendees based on what they want to know from this formative leader in dentistry.
Dr. Mortenson was born and raised in Elfrida, Arizona. He graduated from the University of Arizona, where he studied Agriculture and met his wife, Sue. After college, Dr. Mortenson and Sue moved to a small Arizona town to start a family and began farming for Ralston Purina. After a few years on the farm, the Mortensons, then in their 30s, decided to move their entire family of six across the country to pursue a new path — a career in dentistry.
In 1979, he received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Louisville, and opened his first dental practice shortly thereafter. The Mortenson Family Dental brand and business began to grow in the Louisville community over the years. One location soon became two and then three and then more.
With Sue’s enthusiasm, the brand flourished. Mortenson relatives began pursuing dental educations and soon began practicing dentistry all over Louisville. Eventually, Mortenson Family Dental expanded into more dental service offerings by opening Kid’s Dentistree, BracesBracesBraces and Oral Facial Surgery Group.
In 2011, Dr. Mortenson continued to grow the business by partnering with a colleague he met in a dental mastermind group, bringing Howard Family Dental into the family of brands and establishing Mortenson Dental Partners. Since then, the company has more than doubled in size and is operating in nine states.
“We have always believed that if we take great care of our patients and our community, the rest will take care of itself. Sue and I feel fortunate to have been called to Louisville. Louisville has been a wonderful home to us, a great place for our family and great place for our business. I am so proud of the care we were able to give when we first started, and now the care our teams are able to give to patients each and every day across the country. We know when we are caring for everyone, sharing abundantly, building relationships and expressing gratitude, we are leaving a positive mark on those we encounter.”
Dr. Mortenson is a well-respected member of both his local community as well as the larger dental community. He has served on the Board for The Smiles for Life Foundation, the Board of Overseers for the University of Louisville and is actively involved in his church. He has been recognized by the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in honor of National Philanthropy Day, by WaterStep and the American Heart Association. In 2018, he and his wife, Sue, were inducted into the Dental Hall of Fame.
Don’t miss out on this tremendous Q&A opportunity with Dr. Mortenson at the 5th annual Scaling Up Group Dental Symposium, August 21-23, in Louisville, KY. Created to be a forum of conversation about the dental industry, Scaling Up has quickly become one of the top DSO conferences in the country. Built around idea sharing and networking, the inclusive culture of Scaling Up is one that has attendees returning year after year.
