Aspen Dental Management Significantly Changes Dental Support Expansion Strategy

Despite Aspen Dental Management’s (ADMI) past issues with New York’s Attorney General, in May 2016 they announced they would be relocating their practice support center from DeWitt in East Syracuse to downtown Syracuse in order to retain nearly 600 people, be a part of a downtown revitalization effort, and accommodate its growing dental support staff. The new HQ was to be located in City Center at 400 S. Salina St, the former Sibley’s department store. The leased facility was to be 170,000 square feet of space and the company was going to add an additional 400 jobs by 2020. The anticipated move-in date was late 2017. 

In May of 2016, when ADMI chose the downtown Syracuse location, the company was supporting 550 locations in 33 states. Just a year and a half later, Aspen Dental Management is now supporting over 660 locations in 36 states. According to a study by Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management, ADMI contributes an estimated $100 million to the regional economy of Central New York each year in employee wages and benefits, locally-sourced goods and services and local tax contributions.

Although they are still planning to expand their dental support staff, there has been a change to the original strategy, and the difference is quite significant: its about a 700 mile difference.

Syracuse.com reported that ADMI has decided to scrap the idea of relocating their HQ from DeWitt to Syracuse. Aspen reports they will instead add a Midwest dental support ‘satellite’ office in the Chicagoland area by the end of 2018. ADMI also indicated that they will keep their headquarters in the original DeWitt building.  Kathy Dwyer, a spokeswoman for Aspen, said Chicago’s central location is easy for the doctors “whose practices we support and other business partners to travel to.”
